Human Rights

Human Rights Action Centre
The Human Rights Action Centre is a focal point for Amnesty supporters and the wider human rights community.

As well as office space for staff and volunteers, the centre has public spaces available for hire by organisations working in the fields of human rights and social justice. It is an inspirational, practical and affordable space for people to come together to learn about, debate and campaign on human rights issues

Troy Davis was sentenced to death for the murder of Police Officer Mark Allen MacPhail; a murder he maintains he did not commit. The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony. Since then, all but two of the state's non-police witnesses from the trial have recanted or contradicted their testimony.

Judges differ as Davis seeks new trial

Federal judges weighed Tuesday whether condemned inmate Troy Davis has presented enough evidence to stop his execution.

Last month, a three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta halted Davis’ scheduled execution —- the third time his life was spared shortly before he was to be put to death. The judges called their stay “conditional” and scheduled arguments on the appeal.

Richard Hughes - A Keane supporter of Troy Davis

Richard Hughes, drummer with Keane, is a committed human rights campaigner and has pledged his support to Troy Davis's case.

He recently received a personal letter of thanks from Troy's sister Martina, after he wore a similar t-shirt to the one pictured on 'Later with Jools Holland' which did a lot to raise awareness of the case.

Not only is Richard a personal supporter of human rights, but Keane are also screening Amnesty's film You are Powerful ahead of each show on their upcoming UK arena tour, helping us to reach hundreds of thousands of people.

The tour starts this Friday in Belfast- for more information, see the list of dates on their website

Richard hopes to do more to support Troy's case over the coming months, so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out You are Powerful and be like Richard - a proper human rights Keane-o (cringe!)
